First released on January 1st 2004, the Nike DQM x Air Max 90 “Bacon” was a sneaker that came from humble beginnings. Let us break it down for you: Dave Ortiz, former owner of renowned New York based sneaker boutique Dave’s Quality Meat, was the first employee of Zoo York, another NYC based skate store that opened in 1993 by Ortiz’s fellow skaters and graffiti artists Rodney Smith, Eli Gesner, and Adam Schatz. As well as rebel skater of the 90s, Dave and Eli worked together in a nightclub located in the meat packing district of NYC, which served as an inspiration for Ortiz’s boutique, Dave’s Quality Veal – a building that remains in the district to this day. From a $1 bet with Eli, Ortiz created a concept store he called Dave’s Quality Meat - a boutique skate store filled with butcher shop styled motifs. When Nike presented Dave with the opportunity to create his very own colourway, he had 3 months to think of the concept, he chose the Air Max 90 silhouette – a sneaker he felt most comfortable working in, with his motto being function over fashion. Two nights before his deadline Dave found himself starving, which led him to his local deli to order a bacon, egg and cheese, the “Bacon” AM90 colourway hit him! Using a mix of red, pink and brown throughout its premium suede and leather build, Dave pondered whether people would find his bacon themed sneaker funny or corny, he concluded everybody loves bacon, therefore everybody will love his shoe. Alongside Thomas Fenning, the pair broke down every colour with a pantone book to create his famed sneaker masterpiece. Once the sneakers are aligned together in its box, the colours merge to give the appearance of bacon. Dave Ortiz saved around 250-500 pairs upon its release in 2004, and re-released them 4 years later. “At the end of the day, they’re just a pair of sneakers and you might step in s***” – Dave Ortiz. Seventeen years later, the Nike Air Max 90 x DQM “Bacon” returned on March 26th 2021 in celebration of Air Max Day. Dripped in premium leather and suede featuring a red, pink and brown colourway, this 2021 version basks in its OG glory! So fire!
