Arguably one of the most important sneaker releases in history, the Jeff Staple x Nike SB Dunk Low "NYC Pigeon" transformed sneaker culture and introduced hype. Having launched Staple Pigeon in 1997, and Reed Space in 2002, Nike took notice of Staple and in 2005 commissioned Jeff Staple to make the NYC model for the Nike Dunk SB "City Pack" - composed of 4 sneakers dedicated to Tokyo, London, Paris and New York. The shoe’s design combined the world of skateboarding and the soul of New York City in a single form. The colourway was inspired by the pigeon, with the orange sole representing their legs and the grey and white upper representing their feathers. Released February 22nd 2005, the Jeff Staple x Nike SB Dunk Low "NYC Pigeon" marked the emergence of sneaker culture onto the national media scene. Dripped in premium nubuck to recreate the softness of a pigeon’s feathers, Jeff Staple’s signature Pigeon logo can be seen stitched into the lateral heel. With just 150 pairs made, 30 for each of the 5 skate stores in NYC (Rival, Supreme, Recon, KCDC and Reed Space) only Staple’s Reed Space released numbered pairs. Newspapers the next day retold a story of ‘Sneaker Frenzy’ with over one hundred people lined up outside of Reed Space to cop a pair, while NYPD officers contained the crowd.
