Jeff Staple first revealed a black and white sample colourway on Instagram of the “Black Pigeon” in 2018, with the caption “I said Pigeon not Panda!” When collectors caught a glimpse of it, they requested that it also be produced, and so Staple and Nike SB obliged with the release of the Jeff Staple x Nike SB Dunk Low “Panda Pigeon” on January 15th 2019. Inspired by the Panda, the “Panda Pigeon” was originally supposed to be named the “Pangeons” until Nike Legal decided against it. Dripped in premium leather and suede featuring Staple’s iconic pigeon embroidered into the lateral heel, green accents adorn Nike branding on the heel and tongue, while “SAMPLE” lettering can be found in the sock liner. “Pigeon Pink” is a trademark colour Staple has employed on all his past footwear designs, however, he felt “Bamboo Green” accents were more fitting for the “Panda Pigeon.” Nike did in fact produce a sample pair featuring the “Pigeon Pink” accents instead of “Bamboo Green.” A collage of the New York Post front page from the day after the infamous release of the original “NYC Pigeon” SB Dunk in 2005, that proclaimed a “Sneaker Riot” can be seen on the translucent sole.
