Released November 10th 2022, the Why So Sad? x Nike SB Bruin High WMNS “Predatory Bird” is a collaborative effort between Nike SB and Scottish skater John Rattray’s ongoing campaign centred around raising awareness for mental health and suicide prevention named Why So Sad? After losing his sister to suicide and dealing with depression himself, Rattray developed Why So Sad? in 2017, opening a dialogue around mental health within the skate community and beyond. The storytelling platform approaches the serious subject through a lighthearted play on skateboarding's language. A big part of the campaign centres on physical activity, in particular skating and biking, as a key element of coping and regulating so that we can make progress more effectively with the process, because "mental health and physical health are not separate. Our bodies and brains are one system". Dripped in premium leather and suede, the wear-away Swoosh fades over time from “Coastal Blue” to “Speed Yellow,” nodding to the process that Rattray says "we go through when dealing with emotional challenges, and the work required to get back to a solid baseline of happiness". An embroidered cycling chicken graphic on the right heel compliments another embroidered chicken motif, only this time the bird is performing a “sad grab.” More embroidered details can be seen in the form of “?” above the chicken motif on the heels, and lace tips remind you again and again to move, talk and ask, "Why So Sad?" The left insole features Why So Sad? branding as well as behind the tongues. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these SB Dunk Lows, with art by Jon Horner, will go directly to Why So Sad? fundraising efforts. A truly powerful message on a super dope sneaker!
